Marc Riboud is a French photographer who was born in 1923, died in 2016. Until 1951, Reboud worked as an engineer in Lyon factories. During a break taken to photograph the festival of Lyon, he decides to devote himself to photography rather than returning to the factory.* After he moved to Paris where he met Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa, the founders of Magnum agency, he started his career as a photographer. He traveled all over the world and took photographs. He visited China in 1957, became one of the first European photographers to travel into Communist China. Consequently in 1960’s, Reboud visited Soviet Union and took photographs of ordinary people living their lives.
This is the most famous picture of Marc Riboud, <Young girl holding a flower>. This photograph was taken during a huge demonstration against the war in Vietnam. Young girl, Jan Rose Kasmir is standing in front of soldiers armed with bayonet. This photograph became an icon of peace and it’s been widely loved so far. Journalism photography was popular in the era he took photographs. However, Marc showed suggestive moment instead of capturing crucial moment. The way he satirizes society indirectly is so graceful that made people’s mind move. That is the reason he is still beloved by many people.
