Marine Pollution (Midterm Project)

Marine Pollution

Ocean is the largest water body on Earth and it is the home to many marine lives. Over the past decades, human activities and natural causes have severely affected the conditions of the ocean and have threatened the lives of marine animals and plants. A few decades ago, it was assumed that the effects of dumping trash and litter into the sea would only have minimal consequences since the ocean was vast and deep. However, as we have seen today that ocean is being polluted as a result of human activities. Oil spill, toxic chemicals, wastes and various other factors have all contributed to the pollution of the sea. About 80 percent of the contamination comes from land. Therefore, it is our responsibilities to preserve the ocean and create a better environment for the next generations.

About 1.4 billion pounds of trash, such as glass bottles, mining materials and etc, were dumped into the ocean each year. Some of the trash remains on beaches as being washed in with waves and tides, while other sinks into the bottom of the sea. In this iteration, I want to show the future of ocean when it is overwhelmed by trash. Moreover, I purposely have a child standing on the trash to show that future generations, including our children, will be the one who have to bear the consequence of pollution if we continue to litter into the ocean.

This image expresses the idea that trash will harm marine lives and lead to death. The bottom of the image have hands that is made of different type of wastes, from left to rights are plastic bags, plastic bottles and tires. Those hands are trying to drag ocean animals down and kill them.

This picture shows different lives of the same fish when living in different conditions of ocean. The top half of the image demonstrates a health ocean with blue water while the bottom half of the image shows contaminated ocean with dirty water and wastes like tires. The condition of water is crucial to the lives of marine animals. Contaminated environment will lead to the death of these ocean lives.
