- Major in Applied Mathematics and Statistics: The Applied Mathematics and Statistics department is a unified home for the mathematical sciences. In other words, this department focuses on comprehensive math and works on a wide range of important scientific problems. Students who take this major could pursue careers in actuarial studies, creating designs in pharmaceuticals and other medical professions, planning around weather systems, researching the ideas of various sciences, and so much more. It’s not so much creating theories to apply to everyday events as it is creating problems that drive mathematics forward.
- National Deans List, Spring 2011: The National Dean’s List is the most prestigious publication in the country that recognizes gifted students in universities throughout the nation. Only students with a certain grade point average and recognition from their respective Dean can make it onto this list
- Member of Order of Actuarial Students: The OAS is an organization within Stony Brook University for students pursuing a career in actuarial studies. Or this career, it is necessary to take special tests based around mathematics, statistical analysis, laws centered on insurance and other forms of business, and much more. This organization endeavors to help its members with the exams and the career through study groups, corporate presentations from actual actuaries, and participation in job-fairs.
