bsblogo12nSixteen teams met on Saturday, 03 March 2012 at the Student Activities Center to lay claim to being named champion of the Eleventh Annual Bay Scallop Bowl. By early afternoon, eight teams had advanced into the double-elimination round: Mt. Sinai High School; Farmingdale High School; Longwood High School; St. Ann’s School; Bronx High School of Science; The Stony Brook School; Locust Valley High School and Great Neck South High School. As the afternoon wore on, three schools – – Bronx High School of Science, Mt. Sinai High School and a rookie team, Great Neck South High School – – began to rise to the top. In the penultimate round, powerhouse and defending champs Mt. Sinai vanquished the surprising Great Neck South team. Waiting for them in the championship round was Bronx High School of Science. The team from the Bronx had last won the Bay Scallop Bowl in 2004 and the kids from “the City” were anxious to regain the top of the hill. In the final round, Bronx quickly pulled ahead and was never headed. Crowned 2012 Bay Scallop Bowl champions, Bronx High School of Science earned the right to represent New York in the National Ocean Sciences Bowl finals, held in Baltimore in April 2012. Mt. Sinai High School was the 2nd place team and Great Neck South High School was an impressive 3rd.” As part of the activities, Ms. Adrienne Esposito, Executive Director of Citizens Campaign for the Environment, gave the students an enlightening and invigorating presentation on the many environmental impacts associated with the widespread use of plastic shopping bags, especially when grocery shopping. All participating students were issued more durable and environment-friendly cloth shopping bags embossed with the 2012 Bay Scallop Bowl logo.
