BEYOND DEATH – Ecological Resurrections / From Perishing to Flourishing
– artists address the postmortem state of being
– artworks apply this consideration to plants, animals, microbes, fungi, and/or humans – artists select mediums that embody the materiality of the postmortem state and the dismantling of deceased organisms
– artworks honor decomposition and putrefaction of organic matter by focusing on the revitalization of ecosystems (not disgust and revulsion)
Although decomposers’ life-sustaining labors are mostly conducted out of human sight, evidence of the process is commonly described visually as ‘unsightly’, tactilely as ‘yucky’, and aromatically as ‘foul’. This exhibition is dedicated to reversing these assessments by foregrounding the ecological properties of decomposition and putrefaction.
