BACKGROUND

An arrhythmia is a heart disorder that effects someone’s heart rate, either making it beat too fast or too slow. Patients that have arrhythmias of the heart typically undergo a procedure to implant a pacemaker or defibrillator. These devices help control the abnormal heart rhythms. They do so by using electrical pulses that make the heart beat normally. Additionally, having one of these devices implanted is invasive as it involves a minor surgery [3]. However, one of the most frequent complications of this procedure is the formation of hematomas at the surgical site.

A hematoma is a collection of blood that forms outside of blood vessels as the walls of the blood vessels are injured, caused by any type of penetration to the artery or vein. It is a common complication with many different procedures that forms a mass or lump under the skin and appears as a purplish bruise of small or large sizes.

Some signs that suggest someone has developed a hematoma are: pain in the affected area, swelling, and redness.

With this in mind, we hope to decrease the formation of a hematoma, so the patient can be more comfortable and have a successful recovery.
