The Academic Advisors in the Academic & Transfer Advising Office (ATAS) are committed to helping you achieve academic success at Stony Brook University. In order to be in good academic standing at Stony Brook University, you must earn a cumulative GPA or 2.0 or higher. The University has created various levels of Academic Standing to help you monitor your academic progress.

First Semester Warning

  • First Semester students whose GPA is below 2.0

Notice

  • Continuing students in good academic standing whose semester GPA falls below 2.0 for one semester

Warning

  • Continuing students in good academic standing whose semester GPA falls below 2.0 for two consecutive semesters

Probation

  • Continuing students whose cumulative GPA falls below a 2.0

Suspension

  • Students on probation whose cumulative GPA remains below a 2.0 will be suspended
  • Under certain circumstances, suspended students may petition for academic reinstatement
  • If reinstated, students are normally given two semesters to achieve a cumulative GPA above 2.0

Conditional Reinstatement

  • Students who have been suspended and successfully petition for reinstatement are placed on conditional reinstatement
  • Reinstated students are required to sign a contract agreeing to conditions for reinstatement, including regular meetings with an academic advisor as well as expectations regarding minimum grade point average and credit completion
  • Contract details are determined on an individual basis, but most students are required to earn at least a 2.5 semester GPA and 12 credits

Dismissal

  • Students whose GPA remains below a 2.0 after their second semester of reinstatement will be dismissed from the University
