Selected Professional Activities:

Consultant on traumatic bereavement to media outlets including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, National Public Radio (NPR), USA Today, The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), Scientific American, and many others.

Following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack, developed and offered workshops to therapists from three local universities (these were designed to prepare therapists for working with people who had lost a loved one in the catastrophe)

Coauthor of a position paper on the long-term effects of sudden traumatic loss prepared for Kenneth Feinberg, MD, and used in determining financial compensation for those who lost a loved one in the terrorist attack

Developed material on traumatic loss and bereavement for several educational websites, including the American Psychological Association, the Society for Traumatic Stress Studies and the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors

Assisted in developing a website on grief for the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS)

Wrote blogs for the PBS website for bereaved individuals (e.g., “How to Get Through the Holidays”) and their family members and friends (e.g., “Offering Support for the Bereaved: What to Say and Do”)

Worked to promote opportunities for internet peer support among bereaved parents (conducted on behalf of the National Academy of Sciences Planning Committee on the Needs of Bereaved Parents)

Assisted in revising the content of Evermore, a website for bereaved parents

Developed a comprehensive list of free internet resources for those grieving the death of a loved one during the COVID-19 pandemic. This document is being widely distributed to mental health organizations, as well as city, county and state governments, who are making it available to their constituents.
Because her research focuses on the ramifications of traumatic loss, Dr. Wortman is sometimes asked to serve as an expert witness in wrongful death cases. Over the past 30 years, she has been involved in cases against American Airlines, the Ford Motor Company, Electrolux Home Products, Ryder Trucking Company, Union Pacific Railroad, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, General Motors, and Fox News, among others. Her role is to help the jury understand the intense and prolonged distress that many people experience following the sudden, traumatic death of a loved one.
