Team-Based Learning (TBL) Workshop 9am-12pm 8/22/18, Library W4550

This workshop is intended to provide the basic principles of the Team-Based Learning™ (TBL) instructional method and guidance on how to implement TBL effectively. The workshop is conducted in the TBL format, which includes a reading assignment, individual and team Readiness Assurance Tests (iRAT and tRAT) and a set of increasingly challenging application exercises.

The participants are expected to read the readiness assignment prior to attending the workshop. The purpose of providing a reading assignment is to ensure understanding of the fundamental concepts of TBL, which then allows a more in-depth discussion during the workshop.

This session will be led by Dr. Parto Khansari, Certified TBL Trainer Consultant & Professor and Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning and Assessment, School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Wednesday August 22nd, 9am-12pm, Melville Library W4550

Lecture by Dr. Ben Gordon, Director, MIT Broad Foundry, “A Pressure Test to Evaluate Engineering Biology”

Monday, August 20, 2018, 4 PM, Berkner Hall, Brookhaven National Laboratory.
The promise of synthetic biology to someday revolutionize the production of important molecules and materials has been well publicized. What is the utility of the discipline right now? To answer this question, the Department of Defense administered a “pressure test” our facility, a centralized biofoundry for synthetic biology. The pressure test simulated a critical needs, rapid-response situation: We were allowed 90 days to develop biotechnologies to advance the production of 10 different molecules. Overall, the targets represented considerable variety, ranging from industrial chemicals that had already been produced by recombinant organisms (e.g. 1-hexadecanol), complex natural products from plants for which there is little enzyme information (e.g. epicolactone), and chemicals with no known biological route (e.g. tetrahydrofuran).
