Research-Based Practices of Online Teaching
The Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT, formerly TLT) is offering a fully facilitated Research-Based Practices of Online Teaching Workshop. This workshop is intended for faculty scheduled to teach online in the upcoming Winter & Spring 2019 terms. Instructors who are planning to teach in a different term, may register on a space available basis. CELT will confirm whether there is room.
Faculty taking this workshop should already have some experience with Blackboard. The course must have been approved for online delivery by the instructor’s respective curriculum committee.
This workshop is free, delivered online, and must be completed within the four-week timeline. Course Dates: Friday, October 12th, 2018 – Thursday, November 8th, 2018

You will have an introduction to ePortfolio in New Digication, an opportunity to review 5 to 8 Stony Brook Student’s ePortfolio(s) designed in New Digication. We will move on to “How to create an ePortfolio” where you will learn how to create and customize your own ePortfolio. The keynote lecture, “opioids and Opioid Use Disorder: How Science Informs Policy (or Should)” will be delivered by Bertha Madras, PhD, Director of the Laboratory of Addiction Neurobiology at McLean Hospital and Professor of Psychobiology at Harvard Medical School. In public policy, Dr. Madras was Deputy Director for Demand Reduction in the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, and in 2017, she was appointed to the President’s Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis.
The event is open to the public and of special interest to physicians, nurses, researchers, students and other healthcare professionals with an interest in the opioid epidemic.

As the Cold War intensified following World War II, the US organized a secret program known as “Operation Paperclip” to bring more than 1,600 Nazi-affiliated scientists, physicians and engineers to the US to work on space and military research projects. One of the physicians Dr. Hubertus Strughold, worked with the US Air Force and NASA to develop manned spaceflight capabilities and was honored as the “Father of Space Medicine.” This talk examines the history of Strughold’s work during WWII in Germany and our own nation’s past willingness to overlook ethical violations in the name of national security.

What do physicians do when they are not treating patients? They trade in their medical instruments for musical ones! Prognified is the pride of Stony Brook Medicine and will be competing in the Docs Who Rock Battle of the Bands on Sunday, September 23, 12 to 7pm, at Stereo Garden in Patchogue. Come cheer them on as they compete against the bands from Good Samaritan Hospital, Mather Hospital and Eastern Long Island Hospital. Opening for French horn in the University Orchestra – can be either an undergraduate or graduate student. Submit Your Pitch for Stony Brook Live!
The Stony Brook Alumni Association is looking for a dynamic and expressive selection of alumni, faculty, and students to showcase their insights, talent and expertise in a fascinating twelve (12) minute (or less) routine at the Stony Brook Live morning segment at Homecoming on Saturday October 20, 2018. Poetry, scientific talks, groundbreaking research in “layman’s terms,” storytelling, spoken word, skits, and soliloquies are all welcome, but please no musical or dance performances.
Please use the application to upload a two (2) minute pitch video of your performance by September 16, 2018 to be considered. Notification of inclusion in the show will be on September 24, 2018.
