FEDEX No Longer on Contract as of 10/1/18

In the recent past the University was able to utilize FEDEX for overnight letters and small package pick up because they had a consortia agreement with E & I. As of September 30, 2018 that agreement expires and has been awarded to UPS. FEDEX will no longer be on contract with E & I. UPS has been and continues to be the NYS OGS contract holder. If you plan on utilizing NYS funds for overnight mailing and shipping services you will need to utilize UPS. Research funded FEDEX accounts can continue to be used as of October 1, 2018. Pricing for UPS can be found here: https://www.ogs.ny.gov/purchase/prices/7901123066PL_UPS.pdf

It should be noted that the NYS OGS UPS contract is typically less expensive than the new agreement will be with FEDEX. Questions should be directed to Mary La Corte at 631-632-9849 ormary.lacorte@stonybrook.edu

IACS Seminar Speaker, Eric Winsberg, University of South Florida

Tuning models for skill: when is prediction better than accommodation?
In a variety of disciplines ranging from climate science to cosmology, highly idealized simulation models play an important role in gaining understanding and predictive power. Because of the significant role played by idealization, such models often require the “tuning” of parameter values in order to accommodate existing data. It is widely understood that when this occurs, testing the models against the very data used to tune them (“double counting”) is highly undesirable, and it is much better to be able to test models against novel data. But how much better? And why? Philosophers of science (as we tend to do) have disagreed about these questions. I present a framework for understanding model tuning and argue that how serious of a problem “double counting” depends on one’s scientific situation.
