10th Annual National Cancer Survivors Day

10th Annual National Cancer Survivors DayJune 8 was indeed a remarkable day for our community. A record number of cancer survivors (more than 300!) and family and friends (topping 600!) came together to celebrate life with their Stony Brook doctors, nurses and other caregivers at the Cancer Center’s 10th Annual National Cancer Survivors Day. Their message of courage and hope resounded across the nation as similar celebrations were held from coast to coast.

“There is no activity I cherish more than today, the chance to celebrate you, and to celebrate survivorship,” announced Cancer Center Director Yusuf A. Hannun, MD. And to all present it was clear why.

The event’s keynote speaker, Scott Burton, a 20-year bone cancer survivor, professional comedian and world-class juggler, enthralled the audience with his powerful message that laughter in adversity is always good medicine. He entertained all ages with his spectacular juggling feats. He shared not only merriment and wonder, but wisdom, too. Reflecting on the the challenges of cancer: “Our mission is to keep on living, celebrate, and keep doing what we love to do to inspire others.”

Ann Soper, 69, of East Hampton, a seven-year breast cancer survivor enjoyed the day, sharing her philosophy of positivity and well-being with a wide grin: “I like to look at every day as a new one where good things happen. I eat right, walk, clear my mind of problems, and make sure I get to all of my doctor appointments for my cancer care and for my overall health.”

The day’s impact is only first being realized. Many were moved to make new commitments of time, energy and resources to our collective work and still others were reenergized to support the work of the cancer center.

Mary Briny, a long-term breast cancer survivor and current volunteer at the Cancer Center—recently honored as Stony Brook Medicine Volunteer of the Year—was moved to see the impact of the Center and the ways in which her contributions of time, energy and resources have catalytic impact.

Dr. Hannun, captured how the formidable energy of the survivors, and their community, will be married: “With the clinical and research expertise, and the power of our community and philanthropic partners, we will revolutionize cancer care for our patients in our immediate community, all over Long Island, and far beyond.”
