Teju Cole
Looking at Teju Cole’s New York Times article called “Pictures in the Aftermath” was deep on many levels. The article focuses on a photo (Shimpei Takeda’s “Trace #9, Asaka Kuni-tsuko Shrine.”) that appears to be an image of the night sky of stars, but in reality it is soil in Japan which holds radioactive material. This is due to the nuclear bombs America dropped in Japan after World War II. I find these pictures truly impactful because it shows the eternal damage and devastation to an area a nuclear bomb will result in. The image also tricks you into thinking it is stars, but when you discover the reality, the photo holds a much more somber tone. So this photo holds as a abstraction, historical, and future message on the effect of nuclear weapons. LINK
