Wolfstock 2006!

GREAT turnout this weekend for Wolfstock, which is homecoming here. Saturday afternoon’s football game — a big win over rival Albany — featured the debut of the new Stony Brook Marching Band! Response was awesome, and the band sounded great. Credit Perry Goldstein, Josh Cheuvront, and the rest of the crew that put that ensemble together so quickly and so well.

In other news:

  • The purchase of Stony Brook Southampton is now official; they held the big “sign-changing ceremony” earlier this week. If you’re interested in the marine or environmental sciences, there are going to be some outstanding opportunities out there for you. More information should be available soon; the Web site is here. (And if you’re in the area, we’re hosting a big “welcome” party on Saturday 10/14 from 11:00-2:00 at Chancellor’s Hall on the Southampton campus.)
  • Congrats to Joe Nathan, Stony Brook Class of 1997, and the rest of the Seawolves Hall of Fame class inducted this weekend. Joe will be on campus in December (now that his season with the Twins is over).

With regards to the Golden book… I finished it, and I still don’t like it. I think it’s crap. I’d like to call your attention to Lloyd Thacker’s College Unranked. I heard Thacker speak at a conference a few years back when his book came out; he’s the founder of the Education Conservancy, a nonprofit group based whose mission is to help students, colleges, and high schools overcome “commercial interference” in higher education and to promote ethical admissions practices. A 2004 Chronicle of Higher Education profile of Thacker can be found here.

The book, College Unranked, is a collection of essays and comments from deans and presidents across higher education, debunking many of the myths perpetuated by books like Golden’s. It’s well worth the read. Full review soon.
