Digital media has had a profound impact on our lives individually as well as on a grand scale. Although some artists and critics complain about how smartphones and cheaper photographic equipment have oversaturated the world of photography with mediocre photographers, this ability for anyone to take a photo has provided an incredible vessel for social justice and revolution. Digital photography essentially enforces accountability for higher ups since the whole world can see what they’re doing with the press of a couple buttons. It’s becoming harder and harder to silence people and this free market of open sourced information is allowing incredible progress in short periods of time. In the past, photography was reserved for a select few and then with the introduction of the handheld film camera it became a little more accessible. Following this were disposable point and shoots and then some of the early digital cameras. Nowadays, everyone has a decent quality camera in their pocket that can be taken out at any point. This omnipresence of the camera has some terrifying implications but also some reassuring ones as well. It has given a voice and a platform to many that would otherwise have nothing.
