The idea came to me while photographing a waterfall in upstate New York. My initial experiments were with the moving water. The water takes on an almost smoky or icy appearance due to the movement captured in the long exposure.

.

After getting some decent shots of the waterfall, I told my girlfriend to go stand in front of the waterfall and then turn around while I was messing around with the long exposure (photos are unedited so some of the lighting might be wonky).

After taking a bunch of photos with the movement captured in the long exposure, I decided to try removing the blur from the movement by having my subject stand in one spot and then I would cover the lens with a cloth while they moved to a new position and then I would remove my hand and they would be captured with a ghostly appearance with solid definition in multiple locations for the duration of the exposure.

Self portrait. I released the shutter and then had my girlfriend cover the camera as I ran into place.

This is the final capture from this experiment. Interestingly enough, we were not next to each other at any point during this photo. My girlfriend stood and I took the photo and after a couple seconds covered it with my hand, allowing her time to run up to me and cover the camera with her hand (you can actually see the fabric pattern as an almost overlay over the photo). At this point I then removed my hand and ran next to where she was standing for the duration of the photo after she removed her hand.
