Project 3 Environment
Final Project Proposal
My final project is about the authentic Chinese Cuisines in Flushing, Queens and the culture behind it. China is one of the oldest civilizations in the world and also my mother country. We all know that China is famous for the Great Wall, Four Great Inventions or the five thousand years of history. But what I think the most precious thing for Chinese people is our great food culture. In China, each province has there own food culture, among all of them there are eight major styles of cuisine. Chinese people even have an old saying about food: 民以食为天, which basically means “people regard food as their prime want”. In the recent history, Chinese immigration in America has became one of the most powerful group in the society. They keep bringing traditional Chinese culture into America and also make adaption for this new environment. In Queen, New York, there is a new Chinatown expanding like a monster, called Flushing. Flushing is a heaven of illegal immigrants, although most of them need to work seven days a week in a crowded and uncomfortable place. And also because of them, the food culture there is much more authentic than anywhere else in New York. Most of the Chinese restaurants and dinners are following the traditional and authentic working and cooking style. Some cooks in Flushing used to be chefs of some famous restaurants in China. Some of those dishes can even remind me the food I use to eat back in China. So, this time, I will try to use my camera to capture the food culture in Flushing.(Roasted Duck Shop,Flushing, Queens,2015)
