Jason:
- Parental Pressure
- Parents find that school is very important to kids and that they have to make sacrifices to ensure that their child has a bright future. Many care about high school and college but some start as early as elementary school. Michael Wu said that he can get another job but he only has one son and he believes that his son’s education is more important than his job and basically even says it is more important than himself since he broke his ribs. Due to all the pressure some have had to go to paediatricians and psychologists. I watched a video where two primary school girls had to wake up at 6 AM to go to school in Hong Kong from ShenZhen. The problem with grades is also seen here many Asian parents expect high grades. Thus some people would rush home or somewhere afterschool to photoshop their grades so that their parents would not get upset. These Asian parents have very high expectations for their kids and expect their child to get certain jobs, which sometimes forces the child to take a class that they are not suppose to.
- Resources
- The resources given to school can be seen very distinctly. There are the rich and powerful schools in the urban areas and then there are the poor rural areas. These poor minorities lack many things including teachers and the ability to move up in life. People in urban areas due to their location and background have a higher chance of going to a good college. Many schools lack teaching materials and official guidance. There is an international school in Hong Kong that is even lacking computers. Some schools are so lacking that main kids do not have sexual education until they enter university. But there has been some good recent changes to improve schooling. There are now online teaching resources to over 3 million teachers. Private schools have foreign partners allowing their students to gain a larger foreign language advantage. And schools have more funding now which allows for more resources.
Larry(Leyun Zhou):
question9-10(opportunities do the school’s infrastructure bring to students/ What are the benefits of extracurricular activities and high-pressure learning)
There are two parts I want to talk about, the first section is the opportunities school’s infrastructure offered to students. The second section is the benefits of extracurricular activities and the side-effect of high pressure learning.
I will not only focus on primary education, but also tell you something about college education in China. Actually, there are more infrastructure provided in college than in primary education, such as computer centers and labs; and there are opportunities students can develop their interests and variable skills, such as broaden their horizons.
However, those infrastructure all help students to become more versatile.
Since I am a transfer students,I can tell you some experience I had in Chinese college. Sometimes, they have similar infrastructure in high school and college. But there is an interesting phenomenon, in some places, the elementary schools have the best condition of infrastructure, with your growth, the infrastructure become less and less.
To combine my experience and Jason’s researches together, I’ve listed result I got on the slide, you can easily see what I want to express.
At the last part, I am more likely to tell some disadvantages of high-pressure education. Firstly, students don’t have time to read books, due to the high-pressure learning, in their spare time, boys like to spend time on playing computer games, girls definitely like to talk about gossip news, which makes them become extremely superficial, instead of being knowledgeable. Secondly, teens usually don’t like people call them school boy. However, that is the truth. Thirdly, under the high pressure learning, students need to study many courses at the same time, and every course forces you to spend more than 3 hours on it per day, cause each one of them is in high level. Next, this mode of learning cannot help students to be all-round developed, plus, for example, if you are not do well in one class, you almost done within your study life, it sounds terrible but it is not a joke. What’s more, high pressure also has side effects on students’ mental health, for instance, if you do not have enough sleep for several days, that feeling may make you doubt the meaning of life. By the way, students have no time to do what they are interested in, it may influence their career in the future, the only force to push the to learn under that pressure is tests.
Last but not the least, I mention there is a general problem that people usually have the resources but they don’t know how to utilize those infrastructure well. For example, when I was in high school, music class is often occupied by math teachers, or teachers would let us to do self-study rather than teaching us music. There is another big problem, it is the uneven distribution of resources among inland, costal cities and metropolitan. For instance, I’ve studied in Shanghai for two years, I feel that Shanghai has greater resources and provide larger amounts of opportunities than any other cities inland. We have to admit this is the truth, it makes students inland work harder to get the chance to study in big cities like Shanghai through the GAO KAO.
Qifan:
Relationship with Teachers
Chinese students usually do hard working, and they are studious, severe, strict teachers impacted students a lot in a pretty bleak school.
There are some positive ways that can show Chinese students and their teachers have good relationship. For Chinese Students, they are much more respect their teachers. Every day when they met teachers, and before the classes they will say hi to teachers and make a bow for respecting teachers. At the end of classes, students also need to say bye to teachers. During the classes, students should be quite and listen to teachers, also we never allow to play games or use phone. The other way to respect teachers is having a good grade. When we had a good grade, we will feel happy and our teacher will feel that they are successful by letting students know abundant knowledge.
Value teacher’s principles, teacher usually gave students a lot knowledges to let students have the chance to accumulate information. Most knowledge that students have are come from teachers. In school, we can learn different subjects and courses. In addition, teachers taught us some philosophical truth that we cannot learn in our life.
Also, for students, they thought teachers are more authority than parents. Like the same problem or same issues, when parents and teachers tell them at the same moment, they will much more believe the teacher said.
Although the relationship between students and teachers are really peace, there are some things are negative.
When students make mistakes, teachers might blame students and discipline students. For example, if a student in my high school is always lazy to do homework, teacher will let him or her go home to do homework until they finished it, then they can go back to school. If only once, teacher will let them go out of class to do homework after they finished, they can come back to keep to have classes. If some students play phones or talk with other students or read novel during class time, then students will go out for the whole class to stand out and write a confessional letter, also students need to promise never do other things in the class.
In addition, when teachers blame students or say some bad words to students, it could be a sentence that teachers said, it will let students gave up their dream.
For example, when students are really excited to do somethings like painting and your dream is become a famous designer. Thus, you did painting and design every day. When your teacher knew that and she thought your painting are so terrible and you cannot be a designer. Then, you will have no confidence to keep drawing and you will lose your dream. Thus, students and teachers cannot like friends to communicate. Most students afraid to talk with teachers after class.
Teachers also play a role in students’ daily life. Teachers are a mixture of army training sergeants and parents. Teachers are not only need to take care of their studies, but also need to take care of their daily things. For example, some students live on campus, so when they have some problem at school, they will ask help from teachers. They won’t like parents to coddle children and they will object to give students a rap on the knuckle. In school, teachers are students second parents.
Xingchi:
How can teacher help students in an academic aspect?
Well, the basic tasks of teacher are teaching students’ knowledge and help them to be successful. There are 5 ways teachers use to help students in academic aspects. First is setting a high, but not impossible, expectation for students, then push them to achieve the higher standard and remember to offer enough praises during the studying time. Some students may not really smart, but they need encouragement more; teachers always give them more patient and spend more time to help them. Changing teaching instruction is good for the whole class because each student has different strengths and weaknesses. Teachers use this way to let lessons in different styles and attract all students. To achieve academic success, studying in home is also necessary for Chinese students. At this time, teachers often create an effective and consistent schedule for their students to follow at home. Appropriate schedules can improve the learning efficiency greatly. Teachers are knowledgeable but still need study. They always pay attention to new ideas and researches about their subject to enhance teaching ability. In this way, teachers understand subject matter more deeply and flexibly. So that they can help students solve problems, relate one idea to another and address misconceptions.
Why are Chinese students afraid to talk with teachers?
In China, most students do not like talking with teachers alone. It’s because they have been told to obey teacher before they came to school. Teachers and students are not in equal class at first time. And teachers can punish students like standing in a corner or running several circles in playground. So we know students are the managed object in school.
However, Chinese teachers are not strict in life, being strict is only a way to get a better teaching circumstance instead of noised class. One of my high school classmate can get along with our math teacher like friends. She even said that our math teacher is lovely. And she also had the good relation with other teachers.
Wenjun:
What is Chinese student’s motivation to learn will be discussed in this part.
First of all, Chinese education is famous for cruel competition. Finding the background for Chinese lifestyle in job’s finding and the relationship between students’ hobbies and studying.
The first question that it will be answer is how difficult can university students find a job?
(relationships with teachers pic 1)
The data is find in Statista website and some Chinese websites.
The data describe the employment rate for different level students in 2 years after they are graduate. In the graph, we can see if students are graduated from the university is definitely can sharpen theirs’s competitive edge. It is really hard for a high school find a job. So, there are 3 ways that a high school graduates can go.
(relationships with teachers pic 2)
First is “go to the college”, every student want goes to the top university so they will have high salary to ensure their life. Second is “start to work”, I saw a report that come up in the news said that one Chinese father wants his child immediately find a job after he graduated from the high school. The reason is they need use thirty thousand RMB to finish university, however if his child can start to work, he can make money early and has more experience in society. The last one is going to technical secondary school where students can learn a specific skill for specific job like cooking. Above all, students’ motivation to learn is have better life in their later life, have high salary to ensure they have quality life.

Now, we can discuss whether student’s hobbies are related to their major.
Usually, their major is choosing by their parents. Parents have more experience about which major can have better career, and parents will always put their dream into children’s mind which is bad. For a young nonage, they need to decide the major by estimate their gaokao score when they just finish gaokao. And, the major is hard to change in the university.
It’s safe to say children will study in pressure and study for their parents, their future unless they are choosing a suitable major.

These three sentences are chosen from a book called little soldier. These three sentences can show that Chinese system need well discipline students and hardworking students as well as good parents.
