Communicating through Fashion

Communication is the transmission of knowledge and this comes in many forms – through speech, tones, a glare, and even what we wear. Fashion happens to be one of those channels. Fashion is a style of dress or a prevailing custom, and it is customs that make up one’s culture.

We take a close look at how Chinese culture is communicated through fashion. This includes what has changed through the generations, how philosophy has had an effect, as well as how filial piety has affected Chinese fashion.

In the spring of 2015 the expose “China: Through the Looking Glass” was debuted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  This exhibit explored china’s influence on modern fashion as well as the imagery and beauty embedded in its garments fueling international fashion designer’s imaginations.

China, since the beginning of the silk trade has been a source of inspiration to other countries. The culture behind Chinese fashion stretches centuries and is infused with tradition. It is this tradition that gives us a look into china’s rituals and customs.
