Joshua Rashaad McFadden’s main goal is to bring the community and eventually the nation photographs that raise awareness on social issues. He grew up in Rochester, New York and there he realized all the issues worthy of advocating for. After earning his MFA in photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta, Georgia he focused on social justice and civil rights through his photographic work and community organizing. In 2015, he was chosen as one of the top emerging photographers in the world by LensCulture and received the LensCulture Emerging Talent Award followed by an International Photography Award (IPA) Award for his series, After Selma.
A few of his focuses caught my attention. The first one was his “Come to Selfhood” project. To showcase this project, he strategically hung the pieces so once they came in, onlookers were immediately greeted by six slightly larger-than-life-size photographs of black men. Although there wasn’t any accompanying text to inform viewers of his process or material, each seem to be archival printsthat McFadden covered in a gold watercolor. People who viewed it felt like the figures seemed to be floating on the paper since the works hung above eye-level, forcing the viewer to gaze upward to look into the subjects’ eyes. His work provides a quiet, contemplative space to reimagine our understanding of black masculinity, and to encourage self-examination of our own constructed identities.
Another prominent project he worked on was “After Selma” where he took photographs during the 50th anniversary of the historic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. To Joshua, fifty is significant because it symbolizes deliverance, and freedom in action. Each picture was captured candidly, in the moment and his goal was to capture the essence of the people in the photos while fully immersing himself in the environment. For editing, he mostly chose the photos had the loudest statement that made it possible for people to develop emotional connections with his photos.
Lastly, Joshua created my personal favorite work of his, “Colorism”. Because colorism is a global issue, women from practically every race and every ethnic background experience pain and alienation because of the amount of melanin in their skin. Colorism, the inherent belief that one skin tone is better or worse than another. The perceptions attached to skin color and tone controls everyday interactions between people. MccFarden uses portraits he took of a series of black women with different hues of brown to bring awareness to this issue.
