7th Year MSTP, 5th Year Neuroscience Graduate Student
Andrea received a B.A. in Biology with a specialization in neurobiology from Boston University. Andrea completed an internship in Dr. Costantino Iadecola’s neurovascular and neurodegeneration lab at Weill Cornell Medical College. Andrea worked on understanding alterations in pericytes in mice expressing the Swedish mutation of the amyloid precursor protein, which contributed to a publication in PNAS. Andrea then went on to work as an undergraduate student in Dr. Katharina Eikermann-Haerter’s lab studying calcium homeostasis in migraines. After graduating from Boston University, Andrea joined the lab of Dr. Giovanni Manfredi at Weill Cornell Medical College to investigate alterations of mitochondrial metabolism in neurodegenerative diseases. Andrea’s main project focused on understanding the metabolism of fibroblasts taken from patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. After completing her work in Dr. Manfredi’s lab, Andrea matriculated into Stony Brook University School of Medicine’s Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP). For her thesis dissertation, Andrea is investigating the role of the protein dystrophin in the development of oligodendrocytes.
Outside of the lab, Andrea enjoys running and watching/playing sports. She also enjoys volunteering at Stony Brook Health Outreach and Medical Education (SB HOME), a student-run free clinic for the underinsured in Suffolk County. Andrea also serves as a mentor for aspiring pre-medical and pre-doctoral students through on campus and national organizations.
