Currently, at 500 hPa there is a longwave trough over much of the eastern United States, which is associated with weak low pressure at the surface currently centered over New York City. The low will move offshore overnight, which will lead to clouds decreasing and a strong westerly flow over Stony Brook. The low temperature tonight will be around 27F. This weather pattern will continue Saturday as the 500 hPa trough weakens and moves eastward, bringing a high temperature of around 34F to Stony Brook.
