Current Treatments

At the moment, there are several methods to delay cord clamping:

  1. Doctor creates an incision in the mother’s abdomen, then delivers the head of the infant which allows for it to start breathing. The cord is left intact until the baby is fully delivered.
  2. Infant is delivered and placenta is removed and kept above the infant. This allows for continuation of blood flow after being delivered.
  3. Infant is delivered and placed below the level of the placenta for up to a minute before clamping.
  4. Umbilical cord is milked into the infant before clamping, allowing for more blood and nutrients to nourish the infant.
  5. Keep the umbilical cord warm in order to prevent contraction caused by cold air.

Delayed Cord Clamping Cart

  • The DCCC, otherwise known as the (delayed cord clamping cart) is a “small, sterile cart designed to facilitate neonatal resuscitation while the umbilical cord remains intact. The cart is cantilevered over the operating room (OR) table during a CS, allowing the patient to be placed onto it immediately after birth”.- https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33946912/#:~:text=The%20DCCC%20is%20a%20small,onto%20it%20immediately%20after%20birth. 7
  • The DCCC isn’t exactly a treatment but it does serve a purpose by allowing a baby born by C-section to also have immediate warmth. Therefore replicating the warmth of the mother’s chest after birth, allowing the baby to experience delayed cord clamping in a sterile environment.
