Street Photography by Dan Olawski

I chose Street Photography as the subject of my PechaKucha project. In particular, I’m interested in and attracted to the street photography of New York City in the 20th century.

I grew up about six miles from Manhattan in a small town in New Jersey. From my parents’ apartment rear window I could see almost the entire skyline of the City. As a child, I’d stare out (especially at night) and wonder about the people walking around the streets of New York. When I finally got to go to the City, I was mesmerized by the hustle and bustle of everyone rushing past me and of the scenes that played out in front of me. Scenes I’d never see in my hometown.

I chose to focus on four main street photographers (William Klein, Helen Levitt, Lisette Model, and Joel Meyerowitz) and two others (Robert Doisneau and Paul McDonough) who created a couple of my favorite street photography images. Most of them made photos in New York at some point. They all came to street photography in different ways, but were able to truly capture the heart and soul of the genre. They represent the two facets of this genre: story telling and art.
