Experience

Over the years, I’ve participated in many different events that have exposed me to various situations. By taking part in these events, I have gained experience in these fields.

I’ve participated in a program called the National Youth Leadership Forum, which had me travel to Washington D.C. to participate with other youths in various aspects of medical culture, including speaking to researchers and medical faculty, examining trends in medicine, touring various medical facilities and colleges, and creating contacts with esteemed faculty members.

I’ve also taken part in Hofstra University’s Medical Scholars Pipeline Program, which placed a small number of high school students in direct contact with medical doctors, with these professionals serving as our mentors. We participated in lectures, where we would learn about medical-related material, while also examining medical culture through literature. We also got to learn about various medical professions, including interviews with many medical practitioners and examining the procedures and technology that specialized doctors use on their patients. We also got to speak to doctors (live!) while they performed knee-replacement surgery over a webcam, with students able to ask questions about the procedure and see what it would really be like.

I also took part in a small medical research class that taught me research skills that real medical writers commonly utilize, as well as having the opportunity to conduct my own, individualized research and practicing grant proposal writing. Additionally, we presented our research projects to other people, culminating in a massive exchange of information with our classmates and audience.
