I read the article, “Getting Others Right” by Teju Cole. In the article, Cole explains the perspective of two different photographers capturing the Native American life. Horace Poolaw, the photographer of the photo above, and who is also Native American, took the picture of his sister in normal everyday clothes while holding a dog. The other photographer mentioned, Edward S. Curtis, took photos of Native Americans wearing indigenous clothing or the stereotypical idea of what a Native American Indian looks like. We get to see the photograph from Poolaw’s perspective, which is Native Americans are also normal people who wear everyday clothing like everybody else. It shows that Poolaw and Curtis definition of what is a Native American Indian is different.
Through reading this it made me think how it’s very similar to how African Americans are sometimes portrayed. In a lot of pictures taken by non-African Americans, you can see them as criminals, gang members, and more in the negative light.
