Requirements:
1. Currently matriculated Stony Brook student (Undergraduate or Graduate).
2. Able to attend the full tournament from 10am – 3.30pm
3. Sign up in teams of 2
*If you do not have another person to sign up with, feel free to sign up as a solo team and we will do our best to find you a partner.
Style of Debate: American Parliamentary Debate
It is a simple, straightforward, and impromptu style of debate.
You are highly encouraged to attend our General Body Meetings (7.00-8.30pm @ PSY 109) or our weekly practices (Thursday 6 – 7.30pm @ TAC)/(Saturday 2 – 4 pm @ Union 247) to familiarize with this format.
Prizes
Grand prize: 2 Nexus tablets, one for each member of the team
Second prize: 2 free portable internet-provider (500mb) for life, one for each member of the team
Rounds and Cases
There will be 3 rounds for all teams, and then 2 out-round for the finalists.
Each round, 2 teams will argue on one case. The full case will be will be provided to teams before the start of every round. There will be 3 cases to choose and they will represent different topics.
Topics you should anticipate for : Minimum wage, Affirmative action, Stony Brook policies, Childhood obesity, FDA-approval process and policies for approved drugs, Fast food tax, Universal healthcare, and others.
The full case will not be disclosed until the beginning of each round.
The full cases will not require specific and technical knowledge on the topic and we will strive to keep them as broad and applicable to everyone as possible.
Participants are encouraged to argue on the ethics, benefits, and practicality of each case provided. Any other angle to attack or support a case is highly encouraged.
Other specifics:
1. Lunch will be provided and catered by O’Sole Mio.
