Social media is one of the most dominating forces in the world today. Never before has news and messages get communicated from person to person so easily. Celebrities and companies finally have an easy way to talk to fans and customers, and people can get their news straight from their phone rather than on TV or in the newspaper. It’s amazing how far we have gone from the last decade. But social media also has a lot of downfalls that come along with it. The hacking of personal information and the issue of cyberbullying are serious concerns introduced with the rise of social media. But another unforeseen issue is people (usually immature teenagers) posting dumb tweets and posts about themselves or someone else online that ruins their image. I’m sure all teenagers are well aware that they can harm themselves if they post dumb things online by now. They are many examples of this before.
Should the Writer be that Selfless?
It’s human nature for us to be selfish. As long as there isn’t any tragedy, we typically look after ourselves first before we look to others. I find that writing with the you-attitude is a safe way of writing in the professional world. All of us had read letters and emails with this style without even realizing it. It’s different from your personal letter or personal email that you deliver to someone you know because you usually talk about yourself and what you want or need. The you-attitude is a way of writing that focuses on the reader (the customer or partner) and what they want rather than the writer to develop a case of trust and understanding that takes advantage of human selfishness.
Does your professors prepare you for Workplace Writing?
Did you or would you feel confident in your writing skills right out of university to be good enough in the workplace? Does your education prepare you with the analytic skills and the familiarity of the types of genres used in your profession needed to success? During one of my summer jobs after my junior year of college, I contribute blog posts like this one that talk about events that my organization has done recently. I feel confident in my writing abilities, so I was a little surprised that my manager ask me to revise it. This was due to me being unfamiliar with blogging from my university.
