I’ve decided that I would like to do a photo series of the process of buying hyped items from Supreme New York, a skateboard brand that has risen in fame 10 fold within the past two decades. I’ve been a collector of the brand for about 8 years as I’ve gone to love the process, watching it’s craft evolve ever so often. I wish I’d done this a couple years ago when the items used to be first come, first serve, and I would wait outside the store from the night before to secure some of the best items before they sell out in store. Now, however, there is an online release as well as a sign-up raffle on the Tuesday of the week, where the winners will receive a confirmation text from Supreme by 1:00PM that day. They are next given a spot in line for the anticipated Thursday release where they are given a specific time period to be at the sign up point by, or else that lose their spot. The raffle itself is open for about 5-7 seconds where if you don’t get through in time at 11:00AM, you will have lucked out of the in-store release for the week. There is security as well as a range of lines that are divided to get into the store in order to eliminate line cutting and long lines wrapping around blocks as they were in the past. The process is selective and secretive, and to document this would be a pleasure and long past due for me personally. This will allow me to study the system at which they use further and provide me with memorabilia to show my kids of my side hustle that got me through High School/College.
