This virtual symposium gathered faculty and students on Thursday March 18th (2021) from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm (New York time EST) for an open conversation on current research, group work and projects related to “Early Modern News-Sheets and Pamphlets in the Hispanic World”. The conversation followed the format of a virtual round table via Zoom.

Invited faculty and students currently working in areas related to Early Modern printed culture, media and news-sheets production and circulation in Ibero-America shared their research, discuss ideas and future projects. The event was free and open to the public upon registration.

The United States had a one-hour time change on March 14th, so please check time differences for your locality. On the day of our symposium, the time difference with Spain (CET) will be +5 hours; with Peru, -1 hour.

PROGRAM (SCRIPT)

Invited participants will be speaking in Spanish. Questions and comments can be done in Spanish or English. After each “bloque”, the chat will be open for questions and comments from the audience.

10:30: Welcome and brief “introducción” (Paul, 3 minutes)
10:35: Informal brief presentations (all invited participants, about 1 minute each)
10:47: Bloque 1. Changes in the last decades in Hispanic Early Modern studies.
11:00: Bloque 2. Methods and case studies: local and Pan-European, Transatlantic, Interamerican scenarios / Printers and print shops and their agents. Pamphlets vs. books.
11:30: Descanso (5’)
11:35: Bloque 3. Philology today. Modern editions of news-sheets and relaciones de sucesos / Digital reading, data mining, network visualizations.
11:55: Bloque 4. Censorship structure in books and printed news. / Transoceanic scenarios.
12:10: Bloque 5. Projects and final comments.
12:28: Agradecimientos.
