“Thanatos” is a surrealist digital painting inspired by the visit to the anatomical museum as well as the talk by Luci and Stephen Nash. While they focus primarily on anatomy and scientific illustration, I was inspired by the themes of thanatology that were present in this visit and in their slideshow. While in the museum, I noticed a longhorn skull on top of one of the shelves and I was immediately drawn to it. This skull that is used for research or even decoration after the animal has passed left me questioning more and more about the life the animal once lived. I created a surrealist digital painting to immortalize this skull that I was drawn to and bring the study of death as well as anatomy into the foreground.
