Portraiture is a broad category of photography and there are many interpretations of what qualifies work as portraiture. A portrait does not not necessarily have to show how someone looks like but rather what that person is trying to express. This could be their culture, sexuality, or just a personal story.
Through this project, I learned that there is so much more to portraiture than merely the idea of capturing a person’s looks and his/her facial features and expressions. It is also important to capture who they are and what they are about and what they want to express. At the same time, this can also reflect what the photographer wants to express. A portrait can reveal a person’s character, culture, identity, age, and what they like. I like to think that there is an underlying story behind each and every photo. I love taking portraits because not only does it allow me to appreciate diverse facial complexions, it also allows me to capture the moment in such a way to record a certain mood or narrative.
