In Teju Cole’s article, “How to Photograph Eternity,” he writes about how it is possible to create a photo to portray a theme and in this case, eternity. Eternity is a very complex theory that you would not think could be simply portrayed in a single picture. Eternity is a state to which time has no application. However, it is very possible to create according to Teju Cole. And that includes taking photos at shutter speeds sufficiently fast to suspend people in the act of walking. And this requires a lot of skill because you can take a picture and make it look like the person is still in motion. Photographers like Garry Winogrand and Helen Levitt are able to make people in their photos look like they are to pass from one frame to another. Another key detail to pay attention to would be the sensed absence of time and to do this, there should be no traffic or congestion. You do not want the audience to start creating drama in their heads of the people in the picture and so certain things in the photo can help do that in the form of street signs and shop names. It is important to create a dreamlike existence that is consistent with the idea that no time is going by. This really comes to show the photography is a form of art that requires a lot of skill and really is about expressing oneself or an idea.
