  • Title: It’s Just Roadkill, Date: Fall 2024, Dimensions: 24″ x 18″ each, Medium: Stone lithograph, mezzotint

Roadkill is an all-encompassing term that dismisses the individuality of the animal that meets its fate on the asphalt. They’re seen as one grotesque entity and they’re defined by their condition and the means by which they became it. Here is the construction and the attempted deconstruction of their entanglement with each other, an exuberant display of the death of the animals that are often disregarded for their commonness in the suburban wilderness. More specifically, these are deceased mammals that I most often encounter on my commute to campus.

This piece was created in three stages using one stone. More animals were added with each stage, filling up and ultimately maximizing the space on the matrix. The first two stages are then flipped to make the arrangement of five pieces, mimicking the tumbling motion from the collision with a vehicle.
