My vision for the future depicts the issue of pollution, more specifically littering. In today’s society, people seem to be negligent of what they do with their trash outside. Food wrappers, coffee cups, newspapers are all discarded out in the open in the hopes that someone else would eventually deal with it. Whole neighborhoods are ruined, the beauty of public parks is diminished, the world is made dirtier, all thanks to littering. In my future, we see the consequences of these actions.
In the first image, we see a little child walking on the street. This street is filled with garbage. We also see a baby with a plastic bag on its head, a clear safety hazard for the child. The second image is meant to be more symbolic. It depicts a person throwing away a crumpled up Earth on a dirty street. It’s meant as a parallel to how when we throw out our trash on the streets, we are essentially throwing away the Earth. The third image is meant to further intensify the problem. Here we see a man wading through a sea of garbage as trash flies through the air. He goes about his day as if it isn’t any different from any other day.
In my future, a world full of trash is the standard. We have neglected where we throw out our waste and as a result it has piled up all around us. These images are meant to create a spark in people; get them to think about their actions. Do we want to live in a world of trash? Can we expect to rationally adjust to this type of environment? Is this where I want my children to grow up? When we think of pollution, we usually think of factories blowing out smoke or oil tankers leaking out into the ocean. People think that these issues are much more significant in affecting the environment than anything they can do as an individual. The images are meant to show that even something that may seem insignificant, like one person littering on the streets, can have a major impact when millions of people do it every day. To induce change, we need to see the personal consequences before they occur. That is the goal of my project: to change a potential future before it becomes a reality.
