Notes: “Frank was born in Switzerland in 1924 before moving to New York at age 23. The crowning achievement of Frank’s career was his photography book The Americans, which was first published in the U.S. in 1959 and featured an intro by Jack KerouacThe Americans consisted of 83 photographs taken by Frank during cross-country road trips in the mid 1950s” (excerpt from article).  In The Americans, Frank explored different areas of America and found that even post-WW2, the country was still just as divided as before. Several photos within the series explores this racial divide and manages to not only display the segregation, but capture the underlying emotions that’re kept within. During the war itself, he lived in Switzerland and studied with photographers from Zurich, Basel, and Geneva. Frank moved to New York in 1947, where his talent won over the then director of Harper’s Bazaar Alexey Brodovitch. From ’49-’52 he worked for publications like Fortune, Life, Look, McCall’s, Vogue, and more.

Task 4: Imaging/processing:

This image was also posted in the journal, but using the non-destructive editing techniques we learned in class, I corrected it and achieved this result.

After edits of “watch” were applied.

Task 5: Edited Constructed Image

Originally one of the “High ISO” photos, but new image has been edited in TextEditor by rearranging and deleting lines of metadata.

Task 6: Final Project Proposal

  1. Sentimental Value
  2. The message of the project started from something I noticed in friends and family. Almost everyone I knew had an object that possesses immense amounts of emotional value for them. To someone looking on the outside, it may appear as nothing more than something like a scarf or a watch. But for the ones tied to it, the meaning goes deeper. Even for myself, I have two or three objects that I will keep until I die, just because of the emotions tied to it and the story behind it. Technical issues to face would be getting people to want to be photographed with the object and also finding a space to shoot said photos. The subjects are not the people, but the items. There will also be a literary element incorporated into each photo to help the viewer begin to understand the underlying story behind the piece.
  3. a) A series of 7-10 photographs (accompanied by a 250-500 word explainer)
  4. The main equipment would be the DSLR camera, but now would require a tripod to ensure that the framing of the new photographs capture as much of the subject as possible. Based on the space in which I shoot, studio lighting may or may not be needed.
