Time line of important events leading to invasion of Ukraine 

-April, 2008 NATO Summit welcomes Ukraine and Georgia to one day become NATO members.

-Putin than says: “Ukraine and Georgia joining NATO is a direct threat to Russia.”

-Ukraine also gets offered to join the EU expansion plan, which would integrate Ukraine with the West, including economically.

-Putin counter offers a deal that involves the EU, Russia, the IMF, and Ukraine. Putin offers Ukraine a really good financial deal.

-The UN says, “no” to Putin.

-2013 President Yanukovych says no to the EU deal.

–  This leads to protests.

– The protests get very violent.

-A number of European Prime Ministers fly to Kiev and a deal is worked out to have elections, which in effect will remove Yanukovych from power.

-At this point the US is also heavily involved with giving Ukraine money and training their military as well.

– Feb 23, 2014 Parliment votes to repeal minority language laws in the East (The Russian language).

– Feb 28th Russian forces begin moving into Crimea. Putin wants to send a message to the West to “back off.”

–  Things only continue to escalate both within Ukraine and internationally.
