About Me
HI! My name is Solange-Renée Puryear Thompson. I’m a senior at Stony Brook University, and at the culmination of the Summer 2022 semester, I will have graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Globalization Studies and International Relations with a double minor in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and French with an emphasis in Francophone Studies. This is my Senior Research Project for my major.
How I Became Interested in the Topic
I chose this topic after a lot of reflection on topics I was interested in that related to Globalization Studies. At first, I thought of writing about the coexistence of capitalism and feminism, but I knew that was too broad a topic to research and produce a project on in one semester, and after many brainstorming sessions, I offhandedly thought about doing my project on global care chains. The semester prior, I’d taken a Women’s Studies course and one of the readings was a body of work written by American sociologist Arlie Hochschild, the woman who coined the term global care chains. I was incredibly interested in the topic and eventually realized that the topic sat right at the intersection of capitalism and feminism, among other ideologies, and would be a perfect topic to study — it was broad but still narrower than the coexistence of capitalism and feminism.
Thank you for reading, I hope you enjoy my project as much as I enjoyed researching for and producing it!
