For my final project, I took inspiration from Cindy Sherman. Specifically, Sherman’s early work, Untitled Film Stills. The photographs that she created fascinated me. The body of work was comprised of photographs that looked as if they were screen-grabs from a film yet they were entirely original. I have always loved cinema and wanted to harness this power for my final project.
In my series, Hitman’s Day Off, I portrayed a character of my own. Using Sherman’s work as inspiration, I too created stills from a film that has never existed. These photographs document the ordinary activities of an average person, yet something is off. There is a mask. To my viewers, I give an image, but not the whole story.
