Eliot Porter

Eliot Porter was an American photographer best known for his work with nature and landscapes. He was born in Illinois in 1901 and from a young age showed an interest in nature, he started off taking photos at his family’s island in Maine. As he got older he attended Harvard University and earned a degree in chemical engineering. Soon after graduating his brother, a painter and art critic (Fairfield Porter) encouraged him to pursue his interest in photography and attempt to make a career out of it. He clearly did very well with his once small interest. His work is held in the Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This is one of Eliot Porter’s most popular works, Hawkweed in Meadow, Great Spruce Head Island, Maine, 1968.
