My something neuro talks about saving a sea lion who is suffering from epilepsy. Thousands of marine mammals have getting brain damage from toxic algae blooms that are getting worse due to climate change. Brain surgery was performed on the sea lion, Cronutt, and may have stopped him from seizing. The doctors who performed this surgery injected embryonic brain cells from a baby pig into his hippocampus to try to stop him from seizing. This procedure has only ever works on mice so it was very experimntal, however, it was Cronutt the sea lions last chance at survival since his condition was getting worse. Now, he is in recorvery and doing well but the docotors will not know how his epilepsy until he is fully recovered. If Cronutt is cured then this surgery will save thousands of more marine mammals who are suffering from this condition.
