When I shadowed Parth today, I had a walking tour of the Teaching Learning Facility. I really enjoy these walking tours to places I have never been too; its a great experience. I met Paul, who is in charge of special projects and the Multimedia things. He has people creating java programs and other people making posters. I saw a poster making printer (I thought it was a piano so that was a little embarrassing). The Teaching Learning Facility is technically a SINC site for Faculty. There are computers there, printers, scannars, etc. I also saw very old tech computers and cassettes, which was very interesting. Parth told me where Nancy Wozniak’s office is located and Nancy is the lady in charge of eportfolios. I also learned that within TLT there are senior consultants and then there are special project consultants. Special project consultants have mini projects such as making badges, creating fliers and Parth showed me their working space (they get their own cubicle within the Teaching, Learning Facility, which is pretty amazing). Then Parth told me about a lot more staff members: a guys name Jack and he is the one in charge of the equipment in the SINC sites such as lightbulbs, chairs, etc.; another guys Richie Von Rauch who is in charge of CoLa reservations, SCALA boards, which are the TVs, the DoIt website (Rauch puts it together); Another guys name Marck Caroll is in charge of any ic.sunysb stuff such as consultant sigup, sparky, server admin, blackboard, etc. And the last important person I learned today is Stanley who is in charge of Dreamspark (MSDNA), the SBConnect Server and Server admin.
For my second hour Danny and Ruhi told me to take attendance and make sure I know who the subs are. That gets a little confusing because I usually I just delete and sub emails; I dont even bother opening them, but when I become a senior consultant, I have to take note of who subs who. It is very important because it indicates if there is a no show or not or whether people send emails correctly or not. I also had to tell a few people to turn on their cameras because some people just log onto SB Connect without turning on their camera. It was a busy day at the Main so I ended up patrolling for a bit and helping out with the printers. Towards the end of my shift, a consultant ended up being stuck at Walmart and couldn’t make his 5pm shift and no one was taking his sub so Danny sent me over to the since site so I could sub for him. He didnt send the sub email yet and was able to make his shift at 5 minutes late. With this situation, we ended up calling Rose and she compensated me for my walk to the SINC site and the late consultant was able to take his shift.
For Help Desk, from Diane taught me quite a lot today. A few people including me updated our clickers so I was able to learn how to do that. It was a simple process; I just have to use the laptop on the side and connect it to the clicker and press update. It is good to update clickers because every year theres a update on the software and the older version is slower and sometime cannot register. Then Diane went over cleaning , CoLa Reservations and basic patrolling stuff around North Reading second floor. The Diane went on blackboard and taught me how to change the language on blackboard. In order to change the language, I had to go to “My institution”, “Tools/Personal Info”, “Change Personal Settings”, and finally select “Language change”. It was pretty awesome, but since I don’t know any other languages, I don’t think it would be of much use to me. I also learn to about the TLT help desk email and there were so many old emails with answers to common questions that will be so useful for the future. Towards the end of my shift, we got a call from a student about blackboard echoes not working for a microbiology class. I wasn’t able to answer the phone, but I listened t Diane attentively; she asked for user’s netID and she the full class name including section. She allowed me to footprint part of the conversation and I learned that SPT students were students taking online classes.
