Shadowing Week 7 (3/31-4/4)

During my first shadow hour of the week, Parth subbed out and I ended up shadowing CK.  I came across a printer that said “main server failure”.  It did not work and I was going to footprint it,  but CK told me to always restart the computer first to see if it would solve the problem.  Apparently it did so I learned that when something does not work, always restart it before footprinting it or anything else.  AfterI took attendance and CK told me to man the desk and delegate task.  I was able to get the cabinets behind main library desk to be restocked and I told the working consultants to walk around and make sure printers are filled with paper.

I made up my shadowing hour for Diane today from 8:45AM-9:45AM.  During this morning shift, we cleaned the CoLAs.  Then we looked through answered emails so I could gain practice when I become a senior con.  With the extra time left over, I learn how to properly use the interactive white board.  First I must turn on the computer, then I turn projector; turning on the projector first would not allow the white board to function properly.  After I turn on the computer and projector, I log in with my netID.  Once logged in, I click the button that has a plus sign encircled, which located on the right side of the screen.  That button allows me to calibrate the system in order for the interactive white board to work. The end of my hour shadowing was coming to an end when the phone rang. I finally picked up my first real phone call and helped someone out through the phone, however I forgot to ask for the person’s netID which was my mistake.  The person needed help enrolling in classes but he couldn’t due to a hold on his account. I told him to go on his home page and check his hold box on the top left hand corner.  He had financial and health insurance hold so I told him to read through everything and try solving it and if he needed any help, to call back.

For my regular help desk shadow hours with Diane, I did some regular consultant work, filling paper in the printer and making sure no drinks were around.  I also went down to main to make a SPARKY account because I needed it for the internship. It takes at least 24 hours to activate so sometimes if people have LDAP password problems, it means the person did not activate their sparky account yet or if they did, they have to wait 24 hours for processing.  For the rest of my shadowing, I man the CoLA helped desk, while Diane was walking around checking for drinks.  I was able to answer one phone call in regards to CoLA reservations.  I am actually getting used to answering the phones; not as nervous anymore.
