Today we met at the Chemistry Sinc site and there were two sinc site in that building: room 432 and 434. Jim Yee was the Site Manager for that Sinc site and it was nice visiting a new sinc site. For class we got a speech from Diana Voss. She was very energetic and she talked about the importance of the surveys that pop up every time someone uses a Stony Brook Sinc Site computer and go on Google Chrome. I always ignore those surveys and just go to the site I need to, but after hearing Diana talk about it, I am definitely going to utilize the surveys. She informed us that every time blackboard was down or internet service was not good, she’ll get hundreds of emails because the response to the surveys are forwarded to her email and by reading her email, she tries her best to resolve the issue. Never knew surveys were such great communication skills.
For class, Diana also made us act out a scenario where we split up into groups and each group would have a Rose, a senior consultants, a regular consultant that was wearing something violating the dress code and the consultants friends. The senior consultant had to tell the regular consultant about the violation while Rose was watching the whole situation. I didnt play Rose well enough, I kept laughing as I stood and watching the person playing the senior consultant talk to the regular consultant, telling her about the violation and telling her to flip her shirt inside out. This exercise taught us that work business is work business; it should be separate from friendships and things like that because many senior consultants are friends with regular consultants, but they cant let breaking the rules slide because work business is different from being friends.
