Research and Project work

Currently, I am pursuing lab rotation as a part of the curriculum in Dr. Gabor Balazsi’s lab which deals with Gene circuits and the computational modeling of gene regulatory networks. I am studying the cloning process of plasmids which can be used further for various experiments. In the previous semester, I pursued a lab rotation in Dr. Yi-Xian Qin’s (Orthopaedic Bioengineering) lab. The research work I was involved in is the study of Photoacoustic Imaging of the eye which is a non-invasive imaging technique used in cases of blindness and visual impairment. The objective is to study the imaging technique in detail with respect to the eye and apply the same to cartilage.

Previously in my undergraduate studies, as a part of my final project, I worked on a project called “Design and Development of low-cost Spirometer with PC interface (LabVIEW)” used to assess the spirometer parameters and spirograms. The prototype consists of hardware mainly the pressure sensor which measured the air-pressure difference using Hagen-Poiseuille’s law and a microprocessor that processed data into digital data. The LabVIEW software analyzed data giving out spirometric data and spirograms.

The following picture is the design setup of the Spirometer

About Me

Hi! I am Hema Lois and I am currently pursuing a Master of Science (M.S) in Biomedical Engineering at Stony Brook University. I recently graduated with a B.E in Biomedical Engineering from Osmania University, India. I have always been fascinated by how medical studies and engineering studies work in conjunction in order to improve social health and the quality of human life in general. The marvelous outcomes of biomedical engineering such as prosthetics, artificial organs, design of vast medical equipment, and regeneration medicine have taken uphill in recent years and are advancing at an incredible pace as industries worldwide are trying to embrace innovations with open arms. It was these concepts that made me curious and steered me to pursue polytechnic studies and then Engineering studies in Biomedical Engineering. My main aim in pursuing a master’s is to embark on a journey towards research and development which will broaden my horizons and enhance my knowledge in the course field. After my master’s, I hope to pursue Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering specializing in Tissue Engineering.
