Project #3 – biological metaphor

⌈root of the mind⌋

This illustration is intended to represent the degradation of the brain as a result of Alzheimer’s/dementia. The below image was used as a reference.

I also wanted to incorporate music into this project as a way of touching on the phenomenon of musical sounds providing people with memories of their past. Often, music is used as medicine for these patients due to how they have been found to jog a person’s memory. By playing music from one’s childhood while discussing something that happened in the past, patients with Alzheimer’s and dementia are more likely to recall the memory being described. This is because regions of the brain that are involved in musical memory and processing (e.g., the cerebellum) are not as affected by Alzheimer’s or dementia until much later in the disease course. Patients retain the ability to dance or sing along to the music even after their ability to speak has been forgotten.

The link below is a video of this project animated with a musical composition in the background, worked on collaboratively by myself and a friend (who played the piano).
