⌈stages of sleep⌋
Inspired by my third project, I wanted to continue considering the theme of sleep for my final work. This series, stages of sleep, takes inspiration from the five sleep stages and pulls from three particular ones to focus on: N1 (light sleep), N3 (deepest non-REM sleep), and REM (rapid eye movement).
N1 (Stage 1): The lightest sleep stage. Brain waves transition from alpha (wakefulness) to theta (sleep). People awoken from this stage may not have realized they were even asleep. I wanted to depict a sense of internal turmoil and struggle with falling and staying asleep.
N3 (Stage 3): The deepest stage of sleep. This is also the stage when sleepwalking and night terrors occur. Here, I wanted to show the dichotomy of this stage being the most restful, in which your body heals and strengthens itself, while also being a stage where you have the least control of yourself, and your mind is susceptible to bothersome things like night terrors.
REM (Rapid Eye Movement): The stage associated with dreaming. While it isn’t the most restful stage, I wanted to show the types of dreams and experiences that come from being in this state.
