Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) / ˈɔˌtɪzəm ˈspektrəm dɪsˈɔrdərz/

noun

1. a range of developmental disorders, normally present from early childhood, characterized by the delay of language development, difficulty communicating, deficits in social skills, intellectual disability, and/or unusual interests or behaviors.

 

You may have heard the word “autism” being tossed around in public. The incidence of ASDs is on the rise, and there is still so much we have to learn. The main mystery scientists are actively working to uncover is the cause of ASDs. You may also be wondering why we use the term “ASD” instead of simply “autism”. Being a spectrum disorder, the symptoms of autism can range in severity and we want to acknowledge that diagnosed individuals may lie anywhere on the spectrum and have any combination of the symptoms mentioned above. With an alarming rate of ASDs today, it’s frightening that there are so many misconceptions about that make their way into the public eye. Unfortunately, so many resources, treatments, and truths that do not make it to the public  surface. Our goal is to help facilitate an informed discussion and understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorders and more importantly, an understanding of the people who live with them on a daily basis.
