Instrumental Reflection – “Your Planet” by Chrome Sparks
Despite having a lack of words instrumental songs can be powerful and tell an amazing story. Chrome Sparks is new artist that combines different beats and melodies to create songs that literally can be the soundtracks to many unique and beautiful stories. To be honest many of their songs could be used in weird Science Fiction movies because they have a “space-like” and “out of this world” feeling to them. For this reflection I decided to focus on the song “Your Planet” by Chrome Sparks. To me this song represents someone who is able to experience what it is like to visit a foreign place/planet with the aid of illegal substances.
The song begins with this very repetitive and spiraling beat as if a spaceship was landing on a random planet. As the beat continues it’s spiked with little hits of a beat that sounds like rain drops. As the song continues the repetitive beat in the beginning varies in range with the rain drop sounds to create an atmosphere of intrigue and excitement. To me this beat helps me to envision a person or perhaps a group of people searching and discovering a new planet. The beat in my mind I see people walking, running, touching, and experiencing a foreign place they have never seen before.
At a certain point in the song there is the addition of a prolonged maraca like sound. To me this part of the song where the people/person on this journey through a new planet is stopping to see if their is danger in the environment. However, this part of the song is short and the song continues without the maraca sound. Somewhere towards the middle of the song there is a burst of intense laughter and muttering. I have listened to this song many times and have tried to make sense of the random laughter and its meaning to the song. To me I believe that it the sound of people enjoying illegal activities in the form of marijuana. With this in mind it helps to understand the song’s purpose, which is to showcase a story of person or a group of people experiencing a “dream-like state” due to being high on marijuana.
After the random laughter the song goes back to the melody from the beginning. It continues and varies with paces and tones for the rest of the song. The song simply ends with the beat fading out. It is important to note that the song is called “Your Planet” which hence leads me to believe that my interpretation of the song is not far from it’s original purpose/meaning.
This song comes off the EP “Sparks” by Chrome Sparks. The music is made by one man Jeremy Malvin. This guy has a incredible ability to create beautiful soundtracks and stories without even using words. This album is great to listen to on a walk or alone in your room with a great pair of head phones. These songs sound better with stereo headphones/ear buds because the songs divide the melodies, sounds, and tunes between the left and right ear creating intense and unique feeling while listening to their songs.
