“Last and Final” Reflection – “Daydream” by Wallace Collection

“Last and Final” Reflection – “Daydream” by Wallace Collection

For my last and final reflection I decided to write about a song that is near and dear to my heart. Daydream by Wallace Collection is an absolute classic. This song is truly a hallmark of 70’s music and it’s message never fails to reach me every single time I listen to it.

When you think of Daydreaming in general it’s about someone letting go of all their thoughts in the real world to get lost in fantasies and dreams. Although this song does elude to that concept, I personally believe that this song focuses more on the fact that Daydreams are temporary and fleeting. This concept of a temporary or fleeting nature of a Daydream is applied to the singer’s love for someone.

There are many lyrics and devices that showcase how this person’s lover is simply a very distant memory that he/she tries desperately to hold onto. The lyric, “Daydream, I fell asleep amid the flowers
For a couple of hours on a beautiful day”, is significant because it is repeated in the song. This lyric in particular showcases how the person gets lost and wrapped up in their thoughts about this person for many hours. The lyric, “I dreamed of the places I’ve been with you” is saddening because it showcases that this lover is no longer in this person’s life yet he/she tries so hard to hold on to those memories. The last lyric I would like to discuss is, “And then when I kissed you and felt you so near”, this lyric is also very sad in the fact that the kiss this person shared with his/her lover made them closer but the feelings on the lover’s side remain ambiguous and mysterious.

I love this song so much because it comes from one of my favorite movies Mr.Nobody. This movie is simply about a man who is able to experience all possible paths in his life and which one he decides in the end is the one he would like to live. This song is played during the moments where he is with his one true love Anna. The funny thing is that this song is repeated, sped up, slowed down, etc. in a fabulous attempt to show the fleeting nature of their love.

Thanks Anne! Ironically I can’t remember this song at all, and while my memory is far from perfect I can usually get the old neurons to fire eventually. Probably doesn’t help that I haven’t seen the movie either! I guess I’m just missing out altogether.

I can see your interpretation. It’s a little more complex than a straight love song but you support it well with your version.
